Between 1970 ad 1993, he hosted some of the most successful programs in Chicago radio history, including the "Morning Connection" on WVAZ-Fm (V-103) and the late night talk/music forum on WGCI-AM. Richard also hosted popular shows on WBMX and WVON, and became the "Real Steele" on WGRT-AM, where he progressed to program director shortly after the station's transition to WJPC.
A skilled interviewer, Richard has introduced a diverse group of personalities to his audience, from Wynton Marsalis to Larry King. He also hosted a show on WVON when it switched to a talk format, and served as mid-day host on WBEZ. Richard has also been seen on Channel 26, WCIU-TV's "Chicago Today" show for many years, and the "Discovery Showcase", and hosted "Urban Street" with Ty Wansley.
A Chicago native, he devotes much of his time to civic and community causes, particularly those that improve economic, political and cultural awareness within the African-American community. In addition to his almost weekly presence at various charitable and cultural events, Richard has been a pledge host for the past ten years for Channel 11, WTTW, and also worked for a time as a contributing reporter for "Artbeat Chicago" on that station. Richard had a long-term association with the Gateway foundation's drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.
